How to Choose the Right Dry Cat Food for your Cat

It is important to choose the right dry cat food for your cat. When you come to feed your cat you will want to give it the best ingredients to ensure a long, healthy life. It is easy to think that all cat food is the same, but this is not the case.

Cats have a variety of nutritional needs and it’s important that you find a food that will meet all of those needs. Choosing the wrong dry cat food can have lasting consequences for your cat’s health. The type of food you choose now could influence your pet’s health when he’s older.

Before you make a decision about changing your cat’s diet, you need to check with your vet. If your cat has an underlying medical condition already, it will have different nutritional needs than a perfectly healthy cat.

It’s best to skip warehouses or grocery store chains when looking for cat food. While they offer a variety of seemingly healthy foods, the truth is that most of these “healthy” choice pet foods just aren’t that healthy. Instead, look for premium cat food. You can usually find it in pet shops or online stores. Don’t immediately go for the cheapest when it comes to cat food, either. Cheapest doesn’t always mean it’ll keep your pet healthy.

Tips for Choosing Cat food.

1. Look first at the ingredients list on the package of dry cat food. The first ingredient should be some type of meat. If it’s not, keep looking. Whatever is listed first makes up the majority of content in the food. After finding a package with meat as the first ingredient, study the rest of the list carefully. Ideally, the ingredient list should contain several types of meat and little to no food-based plants like corn or wheat. Corn and wheat are carbohydrates and a cat’s body isn’t designed to handle carbohydrates, so if your dry food is made up of mainly plant food, skip it. Your cat will be healthier for it and meat is the essential ingredient in a cat\’s diet. Their bodies are designed for protein, which they receive from the meat that they eat.

2. Try to find a cat food that fits the stage of life your cat is at. For instance, a senior cat will have vastly different nutritional needs than a kitten. Try to remember that it is important that you buy the best food for the stage of life your cat is at.

Once you’ve selected the best dry cat food for your pet, it’s important to remember some things. First, always make sure that your cat has plenty of available water. In the wild, a cat’s diet contains a significant amount of water. Dry food simply can’t provide the amount of water your cat will need and can lead to problems with his bowels. Make sure the water is clean, if you wouldn’t drink it, don’t expect your cat to.

It is best not to leave food constantly accessible to your cat. Instead, have a regular mealtime schedule and stick to it. By doing this, you’ll also be able to observe your cat’s eating habits and you’ll know if your cat stops eating, which is usually the first sign of illnes.

How to Win Over a Nervous Cat

When you first get your cat it may not be the cuddly little ball of fur that you imagined it would be. You probably thought that it would be ready and willing to accept affection whenever you chose to give it. Some cats however, are very shy by nature, these are the ones that will hide and act scared of you if you look at them. Below are a couple of ideas that may help with the problem.

It is not unusual for a cat to be cautious and timed for the first couple of weeks or so in its new home. The more contact a cat has with humans the less timed it will be. Do not force the issue; instead give your cat a little space. Your kitten will probably approach you once he becomes sure of its new surroundings.

If you have a particular nervous cat, one way to gradually get a cat used to petting is to gently wrap your pet in a thick towel, to prevent it from scratching you, and gently stroke its head. Talk to your cat softly as you do so. Set aside a time each day to perform this bonding ritual and your shy cat may grow to trust you enough to stroke it without the towel, remember patience pays.

Bribery can often work wonders with nervous cats. Try offering a tempting healthy treat, if your cat is hungry enough to overcome its fear and stay still to eat its treat, stroke it gently, don’t make sudden movements! You may have to persevere, but often your pet will eventually accept and enjoy your petting.

Never lose patience, and remember that your nervous cat is not rejecting you, it is just an in built protective reaction to something that has given it cause to be wary of humans. Love and perseverance will often win the day, and you will be rewarded by your cat’s affection
