Over the last thousands of years, cats have pretty much handled their breeding themselves. In the beginning, they were used for one purpose – hunting and killing rodents. As the years progressed, we began to breed cats more to our liking. Cats were one of the first pets, and easily one of the most popular.
There are some cat breeds which have roots going back quite a bit in history. Some Japanese breeds, such as the Japanese Bobtail, can be traced back more than 1,000 years in history. These cats were very common and well known throughout Medieval Japan, today though they are all but a myth throughout Japan and the entire world.
As far as the records show, there are at least 40 distinct cat breeds all over the world although differences among them can be hard to identify. In some breeds the differences can easily be spotted by their size, facial features, and colour features. There are also approximately 30 types that are used in categorizing but these are mainly used for pet shows. For the ordinary person, cats are generally classified as domesticated household pets or wild ones.
Some types of cats that you can get are the British and American shorthairs, the foreign or oriental shorthairs, the Persian or long hairs, there are also some hairless breeds of cats.
While many people believe that some of these breeds have been around for centuries and that other breeds were indigenous to a particular country, in most instances this is not true. In the majority of cases it is through specialized breeding programs that these breeds have been developed.
Due to the fact that cats breed relatively fast and have a short gestation period, and also because litter sizes are quite large most of these breeds have evolved over the last 100 years
Most breeds of cats have initially come from the ordinary moggie cat, and it is through a process of selection and breeding that the various different types of breeds have evolved.
Some of these breeds have appeared just by chance where there have been genetic mutations that have given birth to unusual specimens in a litter and people have taken these unusual kittens and used them for breeding to develop new breeds.
During this breeding process some types of cats have developed various different personalities, characteristics, and in some cases health conditions where they are not quite as durable as the ordinary moggie that is liable to wander in off the street.
It is because of the various different personalities that these breeds of cats have that with a little bit of research it is quite easy to find a cat that complements your own personality. It is a worthwhile exercise to take your time before getting a cat to determine which one will best suit you and your lifestyle.
Over the years, there has been quite a few breeds come along. Millions of people around the world own cats, with many people preferring a cat over any other pet – including dogs. No matter breed of cat you get – you’re sure to get a pet that makes for a great companion for years and years to come.
